GB News: Paracycling Worlds Day 2

The Great Britain Cycling Team claimed a fantastic four time-trial medals on day two of the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Canada, with rainbow jerseys for Fran Brown, Sophie Unwin (piloted by Jenny Holl) and George Peasgood, and silver for Fin Graham. Earlier in the day defending champion in the time-trial and road race, Dame Sarah Storey, was forced to withdraw from the championships following injuries sustained in last week’s UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup.

It was Tokyo silver medallist Graham who started the medal rush with another silver in the men’s C3 category. The young Scot delivered a technically excellent ride, and crossed the line just 0.08 seconds behind Spain’s Eduardo Santas Asensio. Graham’s team-mate and double Paralympic champion Ben Watson finished ninth. Riding in the women’s C1 category, Fran Brown performed brilliantly and blazed to her first world title with a commanding margin of more than seven minutes, and the medal rush continued soon after with Commonwealth silver medallist Sophie Unwin (piloted by Jenny Holl). Unwin and Holl had a tough ask in front of them up against a strong Irish pairing, but executed their ride to perfection and took the rainbow jersey by a margin of 49 seconds.

George Peasgood was up last for Great Britain in the men’s C4 category, defending the title he won in Portugal in 2021, and the Paralympic bronze medallist put in a dominant display to hold on to his rainbow jersey, finishing more than a minute quicker than his nearest rival. It was a day of strong performances across the team, with Daphne Schrager (C3) finishing fourth, Morgan Newberry (C5) finishing fifth and Matthew Robertson (C2) finishing sixth.

The event continues today with Felix Barrow (MT2) and Matt Faucher (MH5) on the start line for the Great Britain Cycling Team.
