Team News: Matt Gibson signs for Ribble Weldtite
One of the country’s fastest sprinters, Matt Gibson, Crit champion in 2018 and stage winner in the Tour de l’Avenir, is joining Ribble Weldtite for the 2021 season after two seasons at Burgos BH.
Matt will be a familiar name to many on the British scene, having previously represented GBCT on the track for a number of years, also winning stages of the Tour de l’Avenir and Tour of Normandie in 2018. Matt’s last tenure with a UK team memorably included wins at the National Criterium Championships, Tour Series and Elite Road Series, clearly demonstrating his quick finishing and technical ability.
Matt, “Not having the best season in 2019 and barely racing in 2020 has really left me feeling that I have a point to prove. I’m already back into training and super motivated to start the season in the best shape I can and try to make a good impression in the early season races. I am incredibly lucky to have a team like Ribble Weldtite that is willing to look after British riders like myself and give me the opportunities I need in order to progress up to WT level which has always been my long term goal.”
Tom Timothy, Ribble Weldtite Team Principal added, “We are really pleased to have Matt complete our line up for 2021 and we feel with Matt we have a squad that can challenge at any level. Matt’s clearly a talented sprinter and criterium rider, however we’ll be seeking to balance his racing opportunities throughout the season to ensure he competes at a UCI level as well as on the domestic scene. We want to give all our riders the opportunity to gain the attention of WorldTour teams and this is a key focus for Matt as well.”
Despite a challenging 2020 for obvious reasons, the team continues to go from strength to strength, with a clear vision and the commitment and support of a core group of partners. 2021 is shaping up to be the team’s most successful to date, both on and off the bike.
Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling have continued to develop year on year and built a sustainable platform for success and progression. The team are continuing at UCI Continental level for 2021.
