Event News: Medway Velo CC’s Race Day

The Medway Velo Cycle Club is proud to announce a morning of racing to be held at the Cylopark in Gravesend on Sunday, 27 April 2014.

Kindly sponsored by Robert Philbrook in memory of his father and renowned frame builder, Bill Philbrook, the event will include three races. The first race is a 4th cat only race, followed by the 2/3/4 race after this the club will be topping off the day with a women’s only race (E/1/2/3/4).

There will be equal prize money in all events to 10th place, with £70 for the winner. The club felt it important that the women’s race had the same purse as the men’s events and hopes this commitment to women’s racing will see a large field of women taking part.

Organising the event for the club is Road Race Secretary Tom Knight, who said: “This is the first open event that the club has held for or a number of years and I hope that people will come and support the racing so we can put on more in the future.”

“We are keen to promote women’s racing and therefore have given the ladies race the prime slot at the end of the racing and ensured that the prize money is equal to the men’s. With a £70 for the winner and money all the way down the line to 10th I am hoping this will be enough to encourage women to race. Often the ladies race can be seen as a sideshow and we want it to be the main event.”

“It is race for a 4th cat race to award such a good run of prize money and again with money being awarded to 10th everyone really has a good chance of being in the winnings.”
